AWC Past, Present and Future

Once upon a time…

 
Once upon a time there was a loose conglomerate of Wiccans and Pagans from all across the land who served as advisers and guides to any who would convene an Australian Wiccan Conference (AWC). Flower1This ensured the preservation of core values and the culture of the AWC across time and space, whilst allowing for expression of the individuality of the convening group. And so, for many years, the AWC proceeded as a vibrant and varied event attended by Pagans of multitudinous traditions in locations as varied as the attendees. For all that the presentation was different each time, and reflective of the individuals holding the event, there were certain traditions that could be relied upon from year to year, and that were held in great esteem by members of the community.

That was then…

 
From fairy tale beginnings, it came to pass that a shadow fell across across the AWC. Knowledge of the history was lost or obscured, traditions were not passed on or were corrupted, and through no individual fault the organisation and presentation of AWCs fell into disarray. Consternation was expressed from those both new and old to the community, and much discussion and debate occurred on social media. This resulted in a consensus to create, firstly, a bidding process for potential convenors to apply to run the 2017 AWC. In the event of multiple suitable bids a committee comprised of representatives from each state would vote on the winning bid. As it happened, only one application was placed, but it was a most welcome one as it most certainly met the standards we were hoping to achieve.

This is now…

 
The second result arising from those events was the creation of an incorporated body – AWC Inc. – which would forevermore serve to ensure the ongoing quality and culture of the AWC as one of the premier events on the Australian Pagan calendar. This will be achieved by preserving the bidding process instituted to decide on the convenors for 2017. The AWC Inc Committee will be comprised of elected members from all around the country, and as well as facilitating the bidding process for each AWC will provide advice and support to the winning bidders, as well as financial oversight. This will preserve those traditions that are important by ensuring convenors are aware and well versed in them, as well as ensuring all conferences are conducted with absolute transparency and integrity.

And into the future…

 
The AWC has a long history of reaching decisions by consensus at the moot. During the discussions that lead to our creation it became apparent that one of the things that had gone wrong was a break down in the moot as the venue for consensus. It’s no longer necessary for you to be in attendance to have your say – after all there are not many of us who can manage to get to every single one. Now, by being a member of AWC Inc, you will be informed of all important developments to do with the AWC and have a chance for your voice to be heard. Full members have the added privilege of voting on the issues, and be offered discounts on their attendance at the AWC.
